Skydivers are a special breed. While jumping out of airplanes is already an adrenaline-fueled pursuit, some take it even further — pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
Skydiving offers a range of career paths, from becoming an instructor to competing in championships, and even performing high-stakes stunts for movies and world records. In fact, millions have witnessed some of the most mind-blowing skydiving tricks.
With so many incredible skydiving stunts throughout history — too many to name — we’ve narrowed it down to four unforgettable stunts that had us all on the edge of our seats.
1. Jump From Space
In 2012, Felix Baumgartner made history by jumping from the edge of space. He leaped from an altitude of 38,969.4 meters (127,852 feet), reaching supersonic speeds of 1,357.6 km/h (843.6 mph)! For reference, at Skydive Palm Beach, we tandem skydive from 10,000 feet, and reach speeds up to 120 mph.
To survive the extreme conditions, Baumgartner used a specially designed pressurized suit and capsule, which were crucial in protecting him from the thin atmosphere and freezing temperatures. His jump shattered multiple records:
- Highest skydive
- First person to break the speed of sound without a vehicle
Years of training, research, and engineering led to this top skydiving stunt, proving that human endurance and technology could defy expectations.

2. Skydiving Without a Parachute
One of the most jaw-dropping skydiving stunts in recent history was performed by Luke Aikins in 2016. He became the first person to intentionally dive from mid-tropospheric altitude and land safely without a parachute or a wingsuit!
Aikins jumped from 25,000 feet and landed safely in a massive net, meticulously designed to absorb the impact. To make it even more nerve-wracking, it was all streamed live!
Fun fact: Aikins was also part of the team that helped Felix Baumgartner achieve his historic space jump.
3. Wingsuit Through London Bridge Towers
In 2022, Marco Fürst and Marco Waltenspiel made history by wingsuiting through the iconic London Bridge Towers.
This was no spur-of-the-moment stunt. The duo spent over a year training, completing hundreds of jumps to prepare for the extreme precision required to navigate the narrow gap. They launched from a helicopter, flying at high speeds through the landmark, cementing their place in skydiving history.
4. Tom Cruise’s 25,000 Foot Skydive
Think Hollywood stunts are all green screens? Think again. In Mission Impossible – Fallout, Tom Cruise personally performed the famous HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) skydive — one of the most dangerous jumps a person can make.
Jumping from between 25,000 and 30,000 feet, Cruise reached speeds of 220 mph before deploying his parachute. Even for professional skydivers, HALO jumps require intense training and preparation due to the risks associated with high-altitude freefall. Now that is an impressive feat!
For context, the highest tandem skydive available in the USA is 30,000 feet. However, this experience is offered seasonally at only one dropzone and is extremely rare due to the specialized equipment, training, and oxygen requirements. As you might expect, these jumps also come with a hefty price tag.
To prepare for this scene, Cruise completed over 100 practice jumps, ensuring he could execute the stunt safely while also capturing it on camera in a single shot. Even for professional skydivers, this was an incredibly demanding achievement that showcased his dedication to performing his own stunts.
Now that’s an impressive commitment to action filmmaking!
The Possibilities Are Endless
Top skydiving stunts don’t have to break world records to be incredible. The sport continues to evolve, with skydivers constantly pushing new limits.
World Record Formations
Some of the most impressive world records include:
- 400–Way Big Way Formation – 400 skydivers flew together to build the largest belly-fly formation.
- 164-Way Vertical Formation – Skydivers flew head-down at high speeds to form a breathtaking aerial pattern.
- 84-Way Head-Up World Record – A team of skydivers completed the biggest head-up formation ever achieved.

Skydiving on the Big Screen
We’ve all seen our share of skydiving scenes in movies. But have you ever wondered how real they are?
Some of the most famous skydiving sequences include:
- Point Break – Featuring an intense mid-air chase scene.
- Mission Impossible – Showcasing Tom Cruise’s real-life HALO jump.
- James Bond – A famous skydiving battle in Moonraker.
- The Bucket List – Where skydiving was used as a metaphor for living life to the fullest.
Did you know that at our sister dropzone, Skydive Key West, some of Hollywood’s most famous skydiving scenes were filmed? License to Kill (a James Bond film) and Drop Zone starring Wesley Snipes were both shot right there! Skydiving has long been a staple in action movies, blending real jumps with Hollywood magic.
